Professional History

Having years of art courses, a degree in Interior Design from Fashion Institute of Technology and ten years designing commercial interiors, Jane wanted to bring her art background into something that would give her instant gratification instead of waiting 2-6 months to see a project complete. Now she sees her project completed within minutes.

Having met her husband Rudy, a top NYC hair stylist for major magazines, rock videos and TV, introduced and encouraged her into the field of make up. Jane apprenticed with make up artists that worked in TV. movies and print. She also took courses from professionals that had been heads of make up departments for major TV stations including special effects.

With background in color and space planning, the transaction was simple and quite successful. Jane's first major make up assignment was on location in Bermuda for Foster Grant, Reebok, Buff Puffs, Puma etc. This was an advertorial for Madmoiselle and Glamour Magazine. Her next assignment was the first annual MTV Awards Show, and then to head the make up for the second, third and fourth MTV award shows.

Other production jobs have included:

  • SPLASH - A bathing suit special, hosted by Carol Alt, with other top runway models, and a whole series of shows for ESPN
  • The Sports Salute To Liberty - Every gold medal recipient of the past 20 years was made up by Jane including Muhammad Ali, Mary Lou Retten, Billy Jean King, Cathy Rigby, Bart Connor etc.
  • NEWSTAND A pilot that featured all major magazine editors including Malcolm Forbes, Jan Wenner, John Mac Carter etc.

These assignments are just a sample of the production that Jane has completed in the past.

As family became a more important ingredient in Jane's life, she took a different direction and decided to work for Chanel Cosmetics in their most popular era until the birth of her daughter. During this time, freelance work was always squeezed in including bridal parties and other special occasions.

The range of a celebrity to an average person is narrow, color is color and bone structure is bone structure. What is in wide range is lighting. That talent can only be obtained through experience, which is an art.

Jane's Philosophy

As a professional make up artist, Jane knows that make up should be simple and uncomplicated. She understands the everyday events from homemaker to the corporate executive. Therefore her understanding of what goes into a make over is what makes her unique. What keeps each clients make over unique is understanding their lifestyle, and that's what makes it all work. Jane also respects that what is new and exciting in make up may not be right for everyone.

Since she has started as a make up artist and not in sales (where so many make up artists start or end up) she is able to focus on the face and not the sale. Unfortunately, in the make up business the sales end has turned so many people off. People who want to learn how to make themselves up and what colors are right are afraid to ask for advice. There are so many people that say they would rather wear no make up than wear it incorrectly.

Knowing what products were used over and over again when doing make overs, these are the products that are in the Pro Make Up line. The range of colors are basic and the special items are needed to have the make up applied properly and to have proper staying power.

Jane Ruffo Make Up Studio has developed an approach whether working in her studio. a salon or a clients home where the client understands and learns the basics, with proper tools and charts. A face plan for make up is essential, just as a floor plan is for a room.
